Fishing Reports by Mike B. at Eastern Marine

Well, Saturday April 4th kicked off another annual Delaware Trout Fishing Season. Eastern Marine was like a Honey Bee hive with activity on the days preceding opening day. Trout fisherman were combing the aisles in search of their favorite go-to baits. While some studied and looked at Rooster Tails, others made sure to get Berkley Power Bait in just the right color. Small jigs accompanied with soft plastic trailers were another popular purchase. Still some stayed with the traditional live bait offerings, such as Wax Worms, Mealy Worms, Butter Worms, and Fat Head Minnows. All of the offerings just mentioned are available here at Eastern Marine. If you should have any questions about our artificial and live bait selections please feel free to call me at Eastern Marine (302) 737-6603 Tuesday – Saturday 8a.m. to 6p.m. or drop me a line on this blog post.
As usual opening day weather was not cooperative. Friday April 3rd saw torrential down pours and when the rain moved through the wind was right behind it. White Clay Creek swelled and was six inches above its norm. Water clarity was chocolaty and all stocked creeks in the New Castle County area were swift moving. Anglers lined the banks of their favorite fishing holes long before the sun ever came up, waiting on the 7:30 a.m. kick off. When daylight poked it’s head the wind was howling, but conditions had improved enough for fishing to commence.
Just a reminder, Eastern Marine is an official state weigh station and you can weigh your catch here. If your trout is over 2lbs weight you are eligible for a citation and patch, courtesy of the state. Although we did not issue as many citations as in previous years, a hand full of anglers eclipsed the 2lb mark. Cynthia Adams of Newark brought a beautiful 2lb 3oz Rainbow Trout to the scales that measured 15”. Cynthia was fishing White Clay Creek and said her trophy fell for a Butter Worm. Some other opening day mentionables were, Justin Stevenson and Christian Swann who both caught 2 pounders in White Clay. Sunday the 5th seemed to be a little more productive, the wind had calmed down, the sun was warm, and the streams had another day to recover. Kurt Brady, Kyle Fletcher, Karl Kenney and Jim Price all had Rainbows they brought to Eastern Marine for citation honors.
The state will be making unannounced stockings on Mondays throughout the month of April and an extra stocking on April 9th. This will encourage those that may have missed opening day to get out there and get themselves a nice limit (6 fish) of trout. Here at Eastern Marine we will be stocking a full line of artificial and live trout baits for the trout-fishing enthusiast throughout the month of April. Well, until next report tight lines and good fishing to all.
