Fishing is a sport enjoyed by many in our area. From the backyard pond to the Atlantic Ocean there are a wide variety of fish species and techniques used to catch them. With the price of fuel and the overall economy everyone is looking for opportunities closer to home. I hope this year to minimize my fishing expenses but not the amount of time-spent fishing.

Farm ponds are a great place to start. Most everyone I know started fishing small ponds. They are numerous in our area and a lot allow access to fishing. Species available are but not limited to Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, and pickerel. Fishing these locations seldom require a boat most often can be fished with at most a pair of rubber knee or hip boots. Some of the larger ponds may require the use of a small boat to get to the most productive areas but most can still be fished from shore.

Children benefit from this type of fishing in many ways. As you know they have a shorter attention span and action is required to maintain interest. One of the most popular methods is using a bobber with a baited hook under it. Because the bobber works as a visual indicator they can see the fish strike when the bobber moves or goes under. Depending on what you are trying to catch will depend on the bait you use. For most species a simple night crawler will do. If you plan to target bass you may want to get some live minnows to entice a fish to bite. Plus if they get tired, cold, or bored it’s much easier to take them home as opposed to fishing on a boat in the middle of the bay.

Creeks and spillways are another great place to fish. They attract many anglers in the spring in search of Yellow and White Perch. These tasty pan fish are usually caught with a floating bobber and shad dart. For the best results the dart is also baited with a grass shrimp, worms, or minnows. To target bigger fish try using small minnows to weed out the smaller fish. Spring is fast approaching and before you know it fishing will be in full swing. Whatever types of fishing you do Eastern Marine’s vast variety of live bait and tackle should be able to outfit you for the trip. And remember to take a kid fishing they are the future of our sport.
