Fishing Reports by Mike B. at Eastern Marine

With the promise of no rain, rising temperatures, and clear skies so came the high pressure. Boaters and bank fishermen alike had the same tale to tell. Where did the fish go? For those who probe the different haunts of Striped Bass in the late winter, now early spring. Catching a few shorts or even schoolies is a reward for braving wind, damp, and cold. The occasional broad shouldered Channel Cat is pay off with his rod bending power and short side to side runs.

This past weekend however, was a bit slow. Most anglers reported small Channel Cat, schoolie stripers up to 20″, and big white perch, but in few numbers. Boaters who fished Ready Point, the pipes and Augustine Jetty all had the same story, slow. Although, John Justinson who fished north of Delaware City, brought two 22″ stripers to the boat. Good show Johnny, yours was the best report I had heard all weekend. Due to the fact I can’t get information on everyone’s day out, I encourage those who view this blog to respond with your days venture. Don’t forget Eastern Marine will have Bloodworms on sale for $6.99 a dozen until May 10th.

Better days seemed to be had on the western side of the peninsula. Joe Yak fished the Susquehanna River and had a banner day with Walleye to 26″ and Striped Bass to 30 lbs. Joe was throwing a variety of stick baits and soft plastics. Being the well-rounded angler Joe is, he also fished Fort DuPont Thursday the 19th and recorded a few small schoolies on our side. Shad on the Susquehanna was another ear catcher. Some sportsmen donned their neoprene and geared up with their ultra-light outfits. Hickey Shad were available for the taking with a variety of darts, small spoons, and tiny offerings of jig-head and soft plastics. Boyd Cochran claimed “Shad were thick enough to foul-hook with a rattle-trap, and some were even mouth-hooked.” Again I encourage all anglers to send or comment on our reports and send their own reviews here to Eastern Marine. Until next report, tight lines and good fishing.

Hey Mike it’s John L, today (03/27/09) I went to bellevue state park caught a 3 pound large mouth bass at 9 o’clock. Then between 1 and 3 o’clock five more bass and five perch, most of the bass between 1 and 3 o’clock were anywhere from a pound to 2-1/2 pounds. Water got a little warmer and the fish started to get a lot more active at bellevue state park, Delaware.
