Freshwater Fishing Report – 04/02/09 Delaware / Maryland

Fishing Reports by Mike B. at Eastern Marine
The forecast for last weekend was encouraging but reports here to Eastern Marine were not spectacular. Saturday was warmer and anglers took the opportunity to try and stick a last minute fish before April 1st and the start of catch and release north of the south jetty at Reedy Point, Delaware. This will also have anglers changing their equipment due to regulations in what is classified as the “spawning grounds”. Remember guys, you must be using a non-offset circle hook when fishing north of that south jetty. Perry Swecker fished in the C & D canal on Tuesday the 31st and brought pictures of a real healthy looking 26” striper he nailed at Scott’s Run. Good job Perry, your picture looks great on our ‘Wall of Fame’ and it’s the first Striper picture of the year. Rich Krone and myself fished the same spot on Sunday the 29th and I missed a nice pull down (due to acting the fool). A few more perch bites and then we relocated. Perry explained that it’s important to fish the skinny water on the marsh side not the canal side towards the channel. Another tip Perry gave was when you start to get those machine gun perch taps, its time to go elsewhere. Anyone who is in need of Non-Offset circle hooks can come to Eastern Marine as we have a good supply of them, snelled or bare. We stock Gamakatsu, Mustad, and other brands. For those who like to dress up their rigs we also stock Bear Paw flicker snelled hooks (Non-Off Set Circle Hooks with red beads and a silver spinner) in black and bleeding red. Don’t forget we still have Bloodworms on sale for $6.99 @ dozen until May 10th and fresh Bunker for the guys who like to chunk for $4.99 @ pound.
Roy Blackwell fished the Delaware City Dikes, Friday the 27th and slammed a beautiful 5 lb 4oz Largemouth Bass. Blackwell was slinging a BOOYAH Chartreuse and White 3/8 oz spinner bait with a 7-1/2 “ Berkley Gulp June Bug worm as a trailer. Roy also bagged a nice 3 pounder while floating a shiner on Tuesday the 31st. Roy said he has a spot that a lot of other fellas at the dikes overlook and it’s producing. Roy purchased his shiners here at Eastern Marine and put them to good use, nice catch Roy.
Everybody here at the shop is asking the same question… What about the Susquehanna Flats Mike? Well, here’s the skinny. Stripers are being caught in multiple locations. Chris Brown ventured to Sandy Point and sleighed Rockfish on 5” Bass Assassins in the ever-popular Chartreuse Flake. Brownie said although there were no big sows in the mix he did well on schoolies to 24”. On light 10# tackle Chris said it was a blast catching numbers of the feisty little males. Bruce Watson had the same to say! Bruce was using Bloods in or around the Turkey Point area. Bruce reported 6-8# Catfish, White Perch 13” to 1-1/2 lbs and Stripers 15-22”. Brownie and Bruce thanks for the real scoop on what’s happening on the Flats. Well till next time tight lines and good fishing fellas.

Hey Mike its John L., went for the opening day trout fishing at Ritten House Park, in Newark Delaware and there were a good number of people there, some catching good size trout too. Most people were using different color bait from green to orange. I was using Gulp trout bites green color and they were hitting it good, not to good on the salmon eggs a few bites. Caught three total, biggest was 1-1/8 LB. I caught/lost some decent size ones but in all had fun.

Then about 9:25 am got first bass weighed 3 and half pounds and the others about a half pound to 2 and a half. Caught 8 Largemouth Bass total today and 34 White Perch total. Also caught either a carp or a yellow perch was decent size to it got pictures on camera of it. Weather today was good for fishing, wind steady till after 10 o’clock then calmed down and turned out to be good for the rest of the day.
