Freshwater Fishing Report – 03/19/09 Delaware / Maryland

Fishing Reports by Mike B. at Eastern Marine
Anglers packed the pier and bank of North East Park in North East Maryland all geared up with expectations of catching big yellow perch. Word traveled like wild fire and the joint was packed on Saturday March 14th. Anglers commented they had not seen this many people fishing in one location since opening day of trout season 08. Live minnows were the preferred bait by many but chartrusse, pearl, and pink & white Krazy Krappie tubes seemed to the trick as well. Anglers returning for a second helping of Fat Head minnows at Eastern Marine said the first 4 dozen didn’t last but a bare 2 hrs. One customer claimed to have caught 70 plus yellows in about 4hrs of fishing. Crappies were also on the menu at North East Park. Some fishermen caught mongo Crappies to 15” mixed in with the Yellows. Gary Yamamoto 2” grubs and minnows in Lime, Hot Pink, and Electric Chicken were top performers. Oh! By the way fella’s we here at Eastern just placed a nice order with Yamamoto from their pan fish line. These items should be available in about 10 days. This line of soft plastics is a must see for fresh water enthusiasts.
Here on the Delaware home front and in nearby counties in Maryland Chain Pickerel have become an ever more popular topic of conversation. These hard fighting, toothy critters are a blast to target. Eric Roderick of Elkton, MD and David Gerhardt of Marshallton, DE have fished Tuckahoe and Unicorn Lakes over the past two weeks and have had great success on large Chains to 26” long. Large or Pike Shiners under a bobber are the ticket for getting these fish to bite, especially now with Pickerel sitting on beds in the hart of the spawn. Here at Eastern we stock an extra large variety of Golden Shiner and can order any size you so choose with pre-payment on Tuesday mornings and delivery on Friday afternnon. Our large shiners run $6.00 @ dozen and we open at 8:00 a.m. Although we close at 6:00 p.m. don’t be afraid to purchase your bait the night before. Here at Eastern we sell the hartiest, healthiest shiners around. We also have a complete live well and aeration selection in our fishing department for maintaining even the most temperamental live fish baits. Ed Raymond brought a dandy 4lb 9oz citation chain pickerel to the scales here at Eastern on Friday the 13th (who said the 13th was unlucky) from Lums Pond. Ed was floating shiners under a bobber when the big girl hit. She measured 24” on the nose and sported the largest profile of any Chain Pickerel I have seen in this area.
On the Deleware River the word is STRIPERS! STRIPERS! STRIPERS! Linesiders have shown up at the usual hot spots. Augustine Beach produced for Tommy Singleton of Port Penn who managed 2 keeper stipers to 29”. An Eastern Marine customer who wished to remain anonymous said his party had Stripped Bass 30”-34”, on Wednesday the 11th of March. Fort DuPont was a bit more quiet for anglers but Kevin Shiedley got on the board with a dandy 34” rock. New Castle has given up 2 keepers for Stan (THE MAN) and Chris Vann has had a steady diet of Stripers to 26 inches. Vann also said he has nailed mongo Catfish along with buddy Ernie who stuck a whopper 13″ 1-1/2 lb White Perch. Good job fellas and thanks for your reports. Oh! yhea, don’t forget Eastern Marine has a sale on Bloodworms until the 10th of May and there only $6.99 @ dozen. Well its time to catch’em up guys, until next post, tight lines and good fishing too all.
